Pelham officials used the March 18 meeting to respond to community questions about the district's science curriculum and its transition to New York's Next Generation Science Standards. Administrators said the standards represent a shift toward inquiry-based learning and a decade-long phased implementation, and they emphasized training for teachers and an ongoing feedback loop with families.
"The new standards are not at all intended to reduce scientific knowledge or rigor," Dr. Champ told the board, adding that the standards aim to deepen students' understanding through investigation and modeling rather than rote memorization. Staff identified OpenSciEd as one of several curricula that turns the standards into classroom units and said it was reviewed by the district science team before selection. Officials urged parents to raise classroom-specific concerns first with teachers and said a formal district feedback process will run in parallel.
The board noted startup costs for new science kits and materials, which the district will frontload in the 2026–27 budget with the expectation that future recurring costs will be smaller as kits transition into building budgets. Administrators also said they will continue to collect student and parent input and adjust implementation practices based on that feedback.
