Juliana Lund briefed the committee on Senate Bill 157 (act 744), which sets a framework for six weeks of paid parental leave at 100% base pay for eligible public and charter school employees and creates a "paid parental leave for educators fund" intended to reimburse local education agencies for substitute costs. Lund cautioned that "no funding has been appropriated to this fund at this time," so the benefit is not yet available until the legislature provides funding.
Staff characterized the law as an important policy shift that still requires an appropriation before it can be operationalized and said the district will monitor future budget actions.
