Clayton proclaims 2026 as yearlong 250th celebration, honors longtime educator Tony Thomas

Mayor Ryan Farmer opened the meeting by reading a city proclamation recognizing 2026 as the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and noting the city will commemorate the milestone during Clayton's Labor Day Festival and fireworks in September 2026.
"Now, therefore, I, Ryan Farmer, mayor of the city of Clayton, Ohio, and the elected and appointed officials of the city of Clayton, do hereby recognize and honor Tony Thomas for his outstanding service to public education and the community and extend sincere appreciation and best wishes upon his retirement," Farmer read as he presented the honor.
Later the council called Tony Thomas forward for a second proclamation recognizing his decades of service in the region's school systems, including his tenure as superintendent of Northmont City Schools and prior roles in Tri-Village and career-technical education. Council members and attendees posed for photographs and offered brief congratulations.
The proclamations do not create policy but formally acknowledge the city's planned public events and Thomas's retirement, effective Aug. 1, 2026.
