Board signs MOU with Elkhart Community Schools to designate Central Fire Station as evacuation site

The Elkhart Board of Public Safety approved a memorandum of understanding between the City of Elkhart and Elkhart Community Schools to designate Central Fire Station (500 East Street) as the evacuation site for Elkhart Freshman Academy in the event of an emergency. Chief Dale presented the MOU and the board authorized the vice chair to sign on the board’s behalf.
Legal counsel Kevin Davis confirmed that the city will require a certificate of liability insurance listing the city as an additional insured and noted the MOU complements the existing school-resource MOU. Chief Dale told members the Central Fire Station can accommodate more than 1,000 people: "we can hold over 1,000 people in Central fire states." The motion passed with no opposition.
