The Osseo School Board met in a special session to canvass the returns of the Nov. 5, 2024 school election to fill three board seats. General counsel Amy Moore explained the board's legal role in the process and the board approved a resolution declaring the official results.
"Under Minnesota law, the school board serves as the canvassing board in the school district," Moore said, summarizing the statutory duty to review abstracts and declare winners. After Moore's presentation, the board approved the canvass resolution in a motion by Director Sarah Mitchell, seconded by Director Tanya Prince; the board recorded the motion as passing 6 to 0.
The board's action included signing an abstract that formally accepts the accumulated vote totals from precincts as the official result, as required by state statute. Board members seated and noted as present included Directors Thomas Brooks, Heather Douglas, Tanya Prince, Jackie Mosquito Jones, Sarah Mitchell and Tamara Grady; Superintendent Dr. Kim Heil and general counsel Amy Moore were also in the room.
The canvass clears the way for the district to finalize election records and for the winners to be issued certificates of election once the statutory contest period has passed.
