Brooklyn Middle students demonstrate STEAM projects at Osseo board meeting

Brooklyn Middle STEAM students and staff presented hands-on lessons and demonstrations to the Osseo Area Schools Board during the Oct. 22 meeting, highlighting classroom projects and district partnerships.
Principal Kim Monette opened the showcase, introducing STEAM coordinator Shannon Komissar and students who demonstrated a circuit-map activity, a culinary "Bulldog Cafe" run by students that drew about 200 attendees, and a unit where students designed an esophagus stent in collaboration with Boston Scientific. "Every content area addresses the engineering design process," Komissar said, describing how the school connects classroom learning to real-world careers.
Students invited board members to try a timed circuit challenge and described field trips and guest-presenter visits. Student Rafael Aquilua summarized a U of M "roadshow" activity: "We saw a real human brain...my favorite activity was the perception glasses," he said, describing an exercise that illustrated how perception affects decision-making.
The presentation aimed to show how STEAM standards are embedded across subjects and how partnerships and events expand student exposure to engineering, science and the arts. Board members thanked students and staff for the demonstration and the instructional connections it showcased.
The board packet listed upcoming STEAM events and indicated broader district support for such partnerships and experiential learning.
