Candidates call for better training and clearer procedures on harassment and safety

Asked whether current procedures to handle harassment, discrimination or violence are sufficient, candidates said the district maintains policies but needs stronger, consistent implementation and more accessible guidance for staff and families.
"We the school board deals with the policy about harassment, and the procedures are enacted by the administration," Rita Evans Becker said, noting the board's role in setting policy while administration follows procedures. Candidates recommended increased staff training, de-escalation and social-emotional learning to prevent incidents, and clearer, plain-language documents so teachers and parents can follow steps quickly.
Several candidates noted privacy considerations and possible retaliation concerns for staff reporting incidents, and urged a balance between confidentiality and demonstrable, consistent consequences so students see cause and effect for misconduct.
