Candidates say superintendent goals should be measurable and tied to the strategic plan

When asked how they would carry out the board's responsibility to set and evaluate superintendent goals, candidates emphasized collaborative, measurable goals aligned to the district strategic plan.
"That should be measurable and also achievable," Kenneth Wutow said, urging data-driven metrics. Rita Evans Becker pointed to Minnesota School Boards Association standards and the use of rubrics: "A lot of times, they're related to the strategic plan... And then midyear, we need to have a review and provide input to the superintendent." Several candidates recommended SMART-style goals augmented by inclusivity and frequent check-ins.
Candidates also urged transparency and community involvement; Helen Bassett described prior use of a finance advisory council and recommended joint goal-setting sessions with the superintendent. Multiple speakers said boards must document issues and follow up between formal reviews to avoid surprises at annual evaluations.
