Board questions speech-therapy contract after implementer model change

During the meeting a board member asked how the district’s new speech-therapy contract will operate in light of recent changes in allowable service models. The trustee noted that teachers used to be able to serve in an ‘‘implementer’’ model but asked whether the contracted company would now provide a speech-language pathology assistant.
District staff replied that the contractor was able to provide a speech-language pathology assistant who will implement services while a district staff member (an SLP oversight role in pre-K) will supervise and ensure appropriate care. "We no longer can use what's called the implementer model, which used to be a teacher that did that," a staff member said, explaining the statutory change and the district’s hiring approach. Staff added the position remains posted and the district will evaluate applicants and the arrangement over time.
Board members asked about paperwork, termination terms and reassessment timing; staff said the contractor will handle documentation and that the district will reassess the arrangement if a qualified applicant from within the district becomes available.
