Montgomery County Executive Mark Elridge urged residents to attend National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 4, saying the neighborhood gatherings let people "talk about crime prevention and the dangers of drugs" while getting to know the officers and community organizations that respond in emergencies. He said more than two dozen events are registered across all six council districts.
Elridge emphasized that the block parties are part of a broader community-policing approach meant to reduce crime and build trust. "These block parties are also about getting to know people who show up when you need them and to make sure that they're not strangers," he said. Deputy Chief Darren Franke told reporters the Montgomery County Police Department has 28 registered National Night Out sites and encouraged residents to find events in their districts online.
