Unexpected $273,000 special-education cost pressures Pelham budget

The board heard that an unexpected special-education expense of about $273,000 emerged after the initial budget draft and will need to be addressed in the 2026'27 budget.
"The majority of this increase is due to an unanticipated special education cost," the superintendent's office said. Treasurer Jim emphasized the district's legal responsibility to provide a free appropriate public education and noted that such obligations limit the board's ability to avoid funding the services.
Trustees discussed possible responses including reallocating nonrecurring funds, using a modest draw on fund balance, or identifying minor revenue increases. Board members repeatedly stressed that cuts closest to the classroom should be avoided where possible.
No formal action was taken at the April 8 meeting beyond directing finance staff to continue evaluating revenue and small adjustments ahead of the April 21 adoption vote.
