Resident proposes longer qualifying window; officials say ordinance or charter change required
Summary
A resident asked why qualifying lasts only a short period and suggested extending it (for example to 8 days); staff said changing the qualifying window would require ordinance or charter review and could not be done that night.

Resident Ken Miller said he had considered running but found only two or three days to submit paperwork and asked whether the charter or ordinance limited qualifying to four days. "Why can't it be 8? That would be 2 weeks instead of just 1 week," Miller said, urging the commission to consider making filing more convenient for prospective candidates.
Officials responded that altering the qualifying period is not something the commission could do immediately; at minimum it would require an ordinance change and possibly charter review. The commission did not take action to change the ordinance in the portion of the transcript provided.
