WEM principals report school climate, special education gains and A&I grant shortfall on ACT goals

K-4 and junior high Principal Myles Knutson reported that PBIS 'Rockstar Student of the Month' assemblies have returned and that the addition of two full-time special-education teachers has improved caseload balance and individualized supports. Knutson also described outdoor learning activities such as fishing at the Morristown Dam and praised classroom morning meetings and family conferences.
High School Principal Brandon Tagg discussed Homecoming activities and reported to the board about the district's Achievement & Integration (A&I) grant goals and performance. Tagg said, "Our first goal was to improve ACT test scores from a 19.8 in 2023 to a 22.0 by June 30, 2026. We did not meet our goal," and noted the district's composite ACT score fell from 17 to 16.7 last year. Tagg told the board the district will reassess ACT prep strategies, work with juniors to develop plans for improvement, and consider how to incorporate preparation into the school day.
Tagg also reported two other A&I goals: raising students' sense of safety (from an 81% baseline toward a 100% target) and increasing staff diversity (from 3% toward 5%). The minutes show modest progress on safety (85% reported feeling safe in the School Perspectives survey) but not yet meeting the stated goals; Tagg said a student survey would require board approval before distribution.
