Board approves two Financial Advisory Commission appointees over objections

The Robbinsdale Area Schools board approved two community appointments to its Financial Advisory Commission (FAC) on Monday despite significant opposition from several board members who cited the district's recent credit downgrade and earlier FAC reports.

"It's about accountability," Director Holmes said during debate, arguing that appointing a former executive finance director to the FAC at this moment could undercut corrective action. Holmes said she would not support appointing Yuki Dozier, noting concerns raised by the S&P presentation earlier in the meeting. Director Bassett countered that the FAC process uses blind review and that Dozier, as a community member and former employee, could provide valuable insight.

After extended discussion, the board took a roll‑call vote on the appointment of Yuki Dozier and Sarah Taylor to the FAC. Directors Vento, Evans Becker, Brooks and Bassett voted yes; Directors Long, Holmes and Chair Bowman voted no. The motion therefore prevailed (4–3).

The exchange highlighted a sharp split on the board between members who urged fresh expertise and inclusion of community members on advisory bodies and members who want stricter vetting and a change in the FAC selection process. Director Holmes asked that the board reconsider whether the committee should be restructured or whether appointment procedures should change mid‑cycle.

The appointees' names were moved forward by a motion to add reconsideration to the agenda earlier in the evening; that procedural motion itself passed 4–3. The appointees will begin serving on the FAC under the current committee charter; any changes to the FAC bylaws or appointment processes would require separate action by the board.
