Chair Renee Bowman announced a special school-board meeting for Aug. 26 to review investigative reports that were submitted earlier in the week. Director Brooks said she had reviewed statute and believed the board's planned public report process "does not seem that we're following the procedure that the statute says" and asked the board to re-check legal requirements.
Chair Bowman and other directors responded that the board had followed the attorney-directed process that began with a closed May 14 session, and that attorney Jim Martin will be present at the Aug. 26 meeting to explain the steps and legal rationale. The exchange grew tense at times; the chair said legal counsel had prescribed the process and the board would defer detailed legal discussion to counsel at the special meeting. "This process has been dictated by our attorneys," the chair said; Director Brooks maintained her reading of statute and requested the matter be clarified publicly on Aug. 26.
