City arts staff presented a study and a public-art program aimed at improving the Pearl Street Mall ahead of its 50th anniversary. The initiative features a mix of temporary activations and longer-term enhancements — from new string lighting and planting beds to a winter garden and upgraded signage — plus several open calls and invitationals for artists.
"It is a study, to recommend long term investment on one of our iconic public spaces," the presenter said, describing plans for temporary activations and a competition to animate the Mall for the anniversary. Staff said they have about $50,000 to allocate next year for this effort, with open-call temporary-art budgets up to $9,500, a $7,000 commemorative painting commission and two invitationals for performance and newspaper-box activations.
Staff also named the standing selection panel and technical reviewers who will oversee selection and implementation. Commissioners asked about accessibility and whether imagery from the commissioned painting could be sold; staff said the image will be used for promotional materials but that public art will remain free and that merchandise sales are not planned.
