The subcommittee reviewed provisions that would allow the district to retroactively grant diplomas to former students who completed grade 12 in specified years but were denied diplomas because of exit‑exam requirements or interruptions such as wartime internment or military service. "Any student who completed grade 12 in the 2003, 2004 through 2014, 2015 school year and met all applicable graduation requirements other than the passage of a high school exit exam shall be granted a high school diploma," Dr. Chamberlain said while summarizing the retroactive-diploma section.
The policy also permits the board to grant honorary diplomas to international-exchange students returning to their home country after one academic year in the district or to students who are terminally ill. The subcommittee did not seek changes to the retroactive/honorary-diploma language during the meeting; the provision will move forward as part of the broader graduation-policy update.
