Residents press board on school safety, ESL supports and meeting notices

Donya Jerrado spoke about Irwin Elementary and said she had video evidence of people entering through multiple exterior doors. "It's too easy to get in," she told Superintendent Matthews, asking what plan the district would implement to secure the site.
Rebecca Brock raised procedural questions about agenda posting and described a growing ESL population in the district, saying she had heard there are roughly 2,000 ESL students speaking at least Spanish, Arabic and Vietnamese, and asked whether principals had guidance if immigration-enforcement officials appeared at schools. Superintendent Matthews and staff said they have started school-safety meetings and that principals are being consulted on emergency planning; Dana Stevens offered to pass specific questions along to Miss Ferguson for follow-up.
Board members took note of the concerns and directed staff to continue school-safety coordination with principals; no immediate policy change was adopted during the meeting.
