The Fayetteville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (FAMPO) has approved and budgeted funding to complete Highland School Road’s connection to Tension Road, a project the district says is intended to relieve traffic congestion around Highland Middle School and accommodate a future Highland High School.
"FAMPO has approved and budgeted for the completion of Highland School Road to be connected with Tension Road," Superintendent Matthews told the board. He said the improved connection is important because Highland School Road currently ends at Highland Middle School and contributes to traffic issues during school arrival and release times. Matthews asked the board to thank Commissioner Matt Nickel, who represents Harnett County on FAMPO, for helping move the project forward.
Matthews estimated the project could be completed "probably a couple of years" before the district’s timeline for a new high school, and said the alignment of the road project fits the district’s planning for the next high-school site. The board agreed to place related scheduling items on future agendas for review.
