State approves Harnett literacy plan; district to use PRC-85 funding and enable read-aloud testing feature

The Harnett County Schools literacy improvement plan has been approved by the state, a move district officials said will allow the district to receive PRC-85 funding to support literacy interventions, Miss Ferguson told the board on Oct. 7.
"Our literacy improvement plan has been approved by the state," Ferguson said, and that approval makes the district eligible for PRC-85 funds the district intends to use to sustain targeted supports. Ferguson said the approval is the result of work by the K–5 team and will support reading interventions and related programming.
Ferguson also explained a testing change the state has designated: "read aloud is now what they call a designated feature." She said the district will enable a read-aloud feature for math and science tests (and for Math I where applicable) but emphasized it should be used when educators identify a consistent need and have practiced the feature with students.
Ferguson told the board that released test specifications for grades 5 and 8 science and biology were delayed; the district is preparing pacing guides and professional development in response to the changing schedule.
