Harnett County Schools wins $1.5 million DoDEA grant to boost middle-school math and science

Harnett County Schools has been awarded a $1,500,000, five-year Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) grant aimed at improving middle-school math and science in five military-impacted schools, district curriculum director Miss Ferguson told the board at its Oct. 7 meeting.
"This grant will target 5 military impacted schools," Ferguson said, describing the award’s focus on increasing student achievement, building teacher capacity and improving teacher retention. The district plans to use the funds for professional development, coaching and other supports tied to math and science instruction, Ferguson said.
Ferguson outlined the district’s instructional framework that will guide use of the grant, including professional development for Eureka math and middle-school science and an emphasis on consistent classroom practices and measurement. She also said the grant work will coordinate with existing initiatives to identify and support teachers and to scale best practices across affected schools.
Board members did not take a separate vote on the grant at the meeting; Ferguson framed the announcement as part of routine curriculum updates and next steps include planning and coordination with impacted schools.
