Barry said a 2021 shade study informed the original playground design; expanding shade by adding a structure would require reengineering existing posts for additional lateral loads and could conflict with required 6-foot horizontal and 7-foot vertical clearances in playground safety zones. He recommended flattening the highest-risk mounds as the near-term mitigation.
Maureen Johnson, who identified herself in Zoom comment, urged the committee to obtain written documentation from a qualified reviewer to protect the city from liability if the city chooses not to fix all mounds. Committee members then voted to form a subcommittee (volunteers named in the meeting) to examine scope, costs, and liability and report back.
