Harnett County Schools superintendent announces resignation effective Sept. 17

Dr. Clemens announced to the Harnett County School Board on Aug. 5 that he has accepted a new professional opportunity and submitted his resignation as superintendent, effective the close of business on Sept. 17, 2024.
In his update he reviewed back-to-school logistics — the convocation scheduled for Aug. 10 at Campbell University, the district’s first day of school on Aug. 14 and ongoing HVAC mitigation at Bowie at Buies Creek Elementary, where staff found mildew growth in some classrooms and are implementing cleaning and remediation. "I hereby submit my resignation as Harnett superintendent of Harnett County Schools effective the close of business on 09/17/2024," he said. The resignation followed his remarks about the district’s growth and the professional relationships he valued during his 7½ years in the position.
Board members thanked Dr. Clemens for his service during the meeting, and the board later moved in closed session to address personnel matters and appointed Brooks Matthews as interim superintendent effective upon Dr. Clemens' departure.
