District awaits state revenue forecast that could force budget reductions

Superintendent Krista Nieraeth told the Santiam Canyon School Board on Nov. 12 that the district is awaiting the state’s revenue forecast on Nov. 19, which will shape how much funding will be available for the remainder of this fiscal year and the next.
"we are waiting to see what the state’s revenue forecast on November 19th will look like and that forecast will inform the state of how much money will be available for funding for the rest of this fiscal year and next fiscal year," Nieraeth said. She added that the Legislature has requested reduction plans from state agencies, including the Oregon Department of Education, to be prepared in case revenues decline.
Board members were not given specific dollar figures at the meeting. The financial report presented by Mrs. Cooper is available online; Nieraeth said if reductions are required at the state level, related information will be presented to the Legislature in February. The district staff did not specify how much of the local budget, if any, would be trimmed or which programs might be affected.
The board did not take formal action on spending at the Nov. 12 meeting; follow-up steps include monitoring the state forecast and, if necessary, preparing reduction scenarios for board review ahead of budget decisions next year.
