District safety update stresses emergency protocols; Aiken hallway fixes and bond options discussed

Safety and Prevention Supervisor Mike Padilla summarized the district's emergency-preparedness work, including adoption of emergency procedures influenced by the I Love You Guys Foundation, districtwide camera coverage and close coordination with the school resource officer.
Padilla said staff maintain radios and trained personnel ready to implement transportation protocols when needed, noting scenarios such as gas leaks or bomb threats could require bus evacuations. Board members asked how the district would know to ready buses and who is responsible; Padilla said certain staff are trained and carry radios to coordinate responses.
Board members identified Aiken Elementary hallways as a particular safety concern. Superintendent Nicole Albisu said the district is exploring options and may use Student Investment Account (SIA) dollars for near-term fixes; she also said passing a bond is a possible longer-term option that would require Board consideration and, ultimately, voter approval. Vice-Chair Abby Apodaca asked staff to prepare a report outlining how a bond could help the project.
