Superintendent outlines equity advisory committee required by SB 732 and summer-school grant details
Summary
Superintendent Susan told the board the district is preparing to form an equity advisory committee under Senate Bill 732 (committee must begin work by Sept. 15) and said the district received a state summer-school grant focused on literacy with an 80-hour instruction requirement for funded programs.
During the superintendent’s report, Susan told the board the district is preparing to meet a new state requirement to form an equity advisory committee.
"Equity advisory committees need to begin by September 15," Susan said, describing the committee’s planned composition of staff, students, parents and community members and saying the district conducted an equity audit with an external consultant. She said the audit’s findings will be shared at the June meeting and that the committee’s work will be included in the district’s Division 22 assurances.
Susan also announced the district received a state grant to expand summer-school programming focused on literacy. She explained the grant requires 80 hours of instruction for students in the funded program and that the district will run programs in July and August aimed at K–3 students below grade-level reading, kindergarten jump-start, credit recovery and a 9th-grade bridge.
Board members asked clarifying questions and were told additional details and outreach to families are forthcoming; the item was informational and no board action was taken at the May meeting.
