Port Orford-Langlois board keeps staff-recognition goal, sets 85% attendance expectation

Board Chair Korinn Hockett opened the Port Orford-Langlois School District 2CJ work session on Jan. 12, 2026, at Pacific High School Library. Board members discussed revisions to the district's board goals and agreed that board-member attendance should be 85% or better.

Members spent the bulk of the session debating Goal #3, which addresses public acknowledgement of school staff. The board considered several ways to recognize staff without overstepping administrative roles: attending assemblies such as "Teacher of the Year" events, increasing informal visits for observation, maintaining the Educational Spotlights portion of regular meetings, and including board participation in the first-of-year staff meeting. "Grow your own" was mentioned as a prior discussion point for professional growth and recruitment. Bob Brown suggested the board could also write thank-you cards to staff.

Board members emphasized inclusivity and privacy concerns, noting that some staff may not want public recognition because of after-hours or family commitments. They agreed to retain Goal #3 but modify its wording and practice to focus on inclusive, nonintrusive recognition, and asked Bob Brown to draft the edited summary for the board packet. The discussion also included suggestions for broader community outreach to raise the district's profile, including continued newsletter use and targeted outreach to local organizations such as the library, Coast Community Health and Rotary.

The board noted they already consider themselves largely in compliance with Goal #4 on attendance and training. No formal vote to adopt a rewritten Goal #3 was recorded in the minutes; the action recorded was assignment of the summary draft to Bob Brown for inclusion in future materials.
