Bentley opened by reminding the trustees that “we shall provide oversight regarding student academic achievement and strategic leadership for maximizing student performance,” language she attributed to the State Board of Education.
Bentley walked trustees through the difference between governance and management, advising that the board define desired results and ask data-driven questions while leaving operational decisions to the superintendent. The session included interactive exercises aimed at clarifying the board’s culture and a set of practical tools — from agenda design to speaker rules — meant to keep meetings professional and focused on academics. “If you take your agendas from the last year, what percentage of the time are you talking about academic performance in your meetings?” she asked, urging trustees to monitor that balance.
Trustees responded with examples of district practice, including regular campus spotlights and weekly superintendent updates. Several trustees volunteered to form or reconstitute ad hoc committees to update the board operating procedures and keep the governance document current.
