Budget committee set April 29 review; board must adopt budget by June 30

Pete Bejarano explained that the committee will review the proposed budget at its April 29 meeting, that the committee can request further information or changes, and that a May 13 meeting is scheduled if additional time is needed.
Bejarano reiterated legal timing: the district must have an adopted budget by June 30; if not, it cannot legally spend any funds. He also described the committee's role—nominating a presiding officer, reviewing the budget document at the function level, hearing from the community and approving appropriations at the function level—and noted that once the committee approves an appropriation the proposal moves to the board for final adoption following required hearings.
Staff emphasized community engagement on potential local option levies and polling to assess voter appetite; committee members discussed the need for updated polling before pursuing a levy.
