District Equity Committee presents recommendations to Stanfield SD 61 board

Crystal Zelke, a member of the District Equity Committee, presented the committee’s early findings and recommendations and described the panel’s role under Senate Bill 732. "It's to assist school leaders in addressing factors that affect the success of students who have historically been excluded or marginalized or underserved in Oregon's education system," Zelke said.
Zelke outlined data the committee reviewed — enrollment in English‑learner programs, special education figures and measures of student poverty — and described several concrete proposals: a peer tutoring program pairing high‑school students with monolingual elementary students; a peer‑mentorship program to encourage responsible behavior and student accountability; and increased academic and social supports for English‑learner and special‑education students. She also flagged extracurricular access, bilingual staffing and out‑of‑district enrollment as ongoing committee priorities. "We're still finding our footing and what that's looking like," Zelke said, and invited questions from the board about student interest in tutoring.
