High school says it already meets much of new Senate Bill 3 graduation requirements

Patrick (speaker S12) briefed the board on implementation of Oregon Senate Bill 3, which requires school districts to ensure students complete 0.5 credit in personal finance and 0.5 credit in higher-education/career-path skills. He said the district has systems in place and that Silverton High School already embeds many of those standards in current courses; the requirement will apply to current sophomores (class of 2027). “The state of Oregon is using this year to provide...the resources and the materials within schools implementing these courses next year,” Patrick said.
Patrick added that the district will map existing coursework to the new standards, track where any gaps exist, and report compliance to the state so graduates meet the new requirements. Board members responded that it was good news the high school is ‘ahead of the curve’ but asked administration to ensure documentation and reporting are in place before the requirement takes effect.
