Silver Falls board delays appointing equity advisory committee to December

Board members agreed to postpone tonight’s appointment of an educational equity advisory committee so members can review candidate materials and the superintendent can present a recommendation at the December meeting.
The Silver Falls School District Board voted to remove the formal appointment of the educational equity advisory committee from tonight’s action items and instead hear a presentation and board Q&A before deciding at the December meeting. Chair (speaker S1) said the board wanted more time to digest information and asked the superintendent’s office to prepare a recommended slate.
Jennifer (speaker S17), who presented ODE guidance on implementing the committee under HB 732, told the board the panel is meant to advise on policy impacts for historically underserved students, inform school-climate conversations, and include at least one member on the district budget committee. “ODE recommends 8 to 10 people on this advisory committee, and we had 14 volunteers,” Jennifer said, urging the board to consider lived experience as well as skills when selecting members. Board members agreed the superintendent should nominate a recommended list for board consideration in December.
