Senator David Brock Smith addressed the Port Orford-Langlois School Board during the public comment period on Dec. 15, saying districts should prepare for reduced funding in the next state budget cycle. "A 5% budget reduction is in the works," he said, and he mentioned upcoming legislation including Senate Bill 916, HR1 and Measure 114.
Smith, who identified himself as a Port Orford High School alumnus and former member of the 2CJ school board, encouraged consideration of small districts during budgeting and thanked the district for what he described as recent positive changes and good stewardship. Board members asked whether agencies would be required to go beyond a 5% cut; Smith responded that they would not, and reiterated his support for small, rural districts given his local experience.
Chair Korinn Hockett paused the meeting to ask whether the board wanted to extend the three-minute public-comment limit so Smith could continue; the board voted to allow the extension unanimously.
