Pickleball layout, fences and lighting conduit detailed in Needham concept design
Summary
Designers proposed five clustered pickleball courts with 12–14-foot fencing on the shared edge with the softball field, a typical 10-foot perimeter fence, space for an optional sixth court pending test pits, and underground conduit for future lighting; consultants shared a sound study finding low perceptible impact at nearby homes.
Shane Louge, the project landscape architect, described several changes to the pickleball layout presented at the meeting: tighter clustering of five courts with four-foot dividers, a central access point to the rest of the park, and a higher fence along the edge adjacent to the softball field. "That fence down line there will potentially be a 12 to 14 foot fence," Louge said, adding that the remainder of the perimeter would use the typical 10-foot height.
Designers also showed a faint shaded box for a possible additional court but warned that utilities and steep grade on the left side of the site create conflicts and would require more study. Louge said lighting was not included in the current budget but that the team will install conduit underground so lights can be added when funds become available. He also summarized a consultant sound study: "the loudest is right next to the court, but as you get to the nearby neighbors, it's very quiet and almost imperceptible."
