On July 22 the Spurger ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to opt out of permitting homeschool student participation in University Interscholastic League (UIL) activities as authorized under Texas Senate Bill 401 (89th Legislature). Brent Marcum moved to opt out; Derrick Gray seconded and the motion passed with no dissent among members present.
At the same meeting the board also approved a staff development minutes waiver for the 2025–26 school year. Both items were presented as part of routine policy and compliance decisions for the coming year; the minutes note the votes but do not include further discussion or implementation detail.
