Crystal Atkins, head coach with the Kearney Youth Football and Cheer program, told the Park and Tree Board she seeks approval to hold a pickleball tournament May 10 at the city’s courts to raise travel funds for 28 girls and three coaches. Atkins said sponsorship and registration systems are ready and that the league will carry insurance.
Atkins told the board ‘‘Each team we would ask $60 per team, so that would be about $30 per person, for the tournament.’’ Board members questioned capacity, court scheduling, and whether the April 7 Board of Aldermen consent agenda slot gives staff adequate time to finalize a contract; the board recommended the item and staff said it will appear on the April 7 consent agenda.
