Anabel Ortiz-Chavolla, Ontario School District 8C's Director of Federal Programs, reported a projected deficit in the district's Title I-A federal grant during the Jan. 26 work session and described how the district plans to respond.
Ortiz-Chavolla said the shortfall is about $80,000 and attributed it to rising salaries and insurance costs. She explained the district plans to reassign funding sources for certain staff roles—specifically several instructional assistants and some instructional coaches—resulting in a net 3.5 full-time-equivalent (FTE) change within the federal grant. "These positions are not going to be eliminated; they will only be funded differently," Ortiz-Chavolla said.
Director Mike Blackaby asked for the grant's total amount; Superintendent Nicole Albisu said the federal program total is "around $160,000," and Ortiz-Chavolla said she would double-check figures with the Early Literacy Coordinator. Ortiz-Chavolla added the federal program team monitors budgets continuously and that the district has had fewer staff changes this year, which contributed to the shortfall given higher salary and insurance rates.
The work session discussion centered on internal accounting and funding-source adjustments; no formal budget amendment or board vote took place in the work session. Ortiz-Chavolla will return with confirmed grant totals and any required language for the regular-session agenda if a formal adjustment is necessary.
