Trustees authorize 43 class‑size exception waivers as district enrollment exceeds projections

District staff presented an enrollment update showing current enrollment at 36,819 and explained the district's overflow process and mitigation steps. Doctor Givens said staff are requesting 43 class‑size exception waivers for sections that exceed the state limit, down from approximately 55 the prior year, and described the district's efforts to identify space, move allocations early and avoid displacing families.

Givens told the board that more than 90% of overflowed students are concentrated among bilingual programs and that the district holds early enrollment meetings, coordinates allocations and tries to add sections when feasible. Trustees asked about Project Right Size impacts, the expectation that some overages may correct through attrition, and supports for teachers and families. After staff responses and discussion of implementation supports, the board authorized staff to seek the class‑size exceptions 7–0.
