Richardson ISD staff spells out special-education evaluation timelines, parents’ role under IDEA

District presenters clarified how students are referred, evaluated and placed under special education and why parental participation is central to ARD committees.
The presenters explained that a referral or teacher/parent concern opens a multidisciplinary process; consent from parents is required before an evaluation and the district has 45 school days to complete that evaluation, followed by up to 30 days to schedule and implement an IEP. “Tenemos 45 días del año escolar para completar la evaluación y... después de que termine la evaluación por ley, usted tiene 30 días para presentarlo y tratar de implementar cuál es el plan de acción,” a presenter said.
Presenters also stressed the need for clear documentation, accurate progress reporting and staff training so the district can meet compliance windows and ensure parents understand the process — particularly families for whom English is not the first language.
