Board adopts K–12 social science materials after public objections over bias

The Medford School District 549C Board of Education voted unanimously April 23 to adopt the recommended K–12 social science instructional materials after a brief discussion that referenced public comments opposing the recommendation.
Resident commenters raised concerns about selection bias and partisan influence in the recommended materials. Board members acknowledged those comments, affirmed that staff followed district policy and state guidelines, and noted that the adoption is required for use this fall. A motion by Director Erik Johnsen, seconded by Director Lilia Caballero, passed on roll call.
Board members said they remain open to future dialogue with community members about the materials even after the adoption.
