Valley Mills ISD reviews safety upgrades; chief reports manslaughter indictment in nearby crash

Chief Roy Fikac updated the board on safety and security operations on Aug. 26, reporting 54 door-sweep inspections across campuses, 18 traffic-control services, and additional staff training in Standard Response Protocols and Stop the Bleed. He said Valley Mills ISD will participate in the TEA District Vulnerability Assessment and has purchased one ballistic shield to comply with House Bill 33’s requirement that each campus have at least one breaching tool and one ballistic shield.
Fikac also told trustees the district had completed Good Cause Exception Review steps required by House Bill 121, including coordinated map sharing with local first responders and updates to the Emergency Operations Plan. He informed the board that an indictment for manslaughter had been issued in connection with a traffic fatality on Highway 6 near the junior high/high school entrance; that incident was described as part of the safety briefing. Trustees heard the overview and took no action beyond ongoing implementation of the safety measures.
