The Old Tappan Mayor and Council opened a public hearing on plans to replace the house that stood at Oaks Park, a project funded in part with New Jersey Green Acres grant money that carries state restrictions on allowable uses.
"We are replacing the house that was at Oaks Park," a council member said, noting the old building had been taken down and utilities are secured on site. The council said preliminary drawings are under way and that, because the property was purchased with Green Acres funds, the borough must follow state rules and a few extra procedural steps before construction can proceed.
Councilors invited public comment on the design and noted the project team is working with the borough's risk manager and social and faith‑community partners about community engagement. Architecture work is ongoing and the council noted an expectation to have a structure in place later in the year contingent on completing required Green Acres approvals.
