SBISD board adopts TASB policy updates, adds student-data confidentiality language to AI policy

The Spring Branch Independent School District Board of Trustees on Jan. 27 approved a package of TASB policy updates and voted unanimously to add student-data protections to the district's artificial-intelligence policy. Trustee Jennifer Hyland requested separate consideration of CQD (LOCAL) and proposed language to limit third-party uses of student information.
Hyland proposed: "The District shall protect the confidentiality of student data. Student information shall be used solely for the provision of contracted educational services and shall not be used for secondary, commercial, or unrelated purposes by third-party entities." Trustees approved the CQD (LOCAL) amendment, along with the remaining TASB updates, by a 6-0 vote.
Board President Shannon Mahan moved the meeting to consider the TASB package as a single motion unless a trustee requested separate discussion; Hyland asked for CQD to be removed for revision and separate vote. The board then approved the remainder of the 27-policy package and later approved the amended CQD language.
The changes come amid growing district and statewide attention to how third-party vendors and instructional technologies handle student information. The minutes do not record additional detail about planned implementation steps, vendor review processes, or timelines for updating contracts; trustees did not request that detail on the record during the meeting.
Trustees present and voting in favor were Shannon Mahan, Walker Agnew Jr., Courtney Anderson, Caroline H. Bennett, Jennifer Hyland and David Slattery.
