South Umpqua reports double-digit third-grade ELA gains, sets higher target for 2026

Superintendent Bare told the board that third-grade reading scores have improved substantially and that the district will keep early literacy central to instruction. "At the end of last year, we ended last year with 38.8 percent of our students meeting the third grade ELA benchmark," she said, and the district plans continued targeted supports.
The board heard that the 38.8% figure reflects local results used to set the district's 2024–25 goals and that the 2025–26 goal is to raise third-grade OSAS reading proficiency from 38.8% to 42% by October 2026. Administrators credited integrated Early Literacy grant funding, high-quality materials and instructional coaching for recent gains and said they will continue mentoring and 30/60/90-day check-ins for new teachers to sustain progress.
