The Education Commission reviewed plans to expand and refine its student-of-the-month recognition and a separate teacher-spotlight program during the July 28 meeting.
Commissioners discussed ways to solicit more nominations—asking principals and colleagues to nominate teachers and rotating outreach across a subset of schools each month. One commissioner suggested asking whether teachers would be available to speak when students are honored; the Moderator said staff can add a question to nomination emails asking whether a teacher will attend the presentation. The commission also discussed upgrading teacher recognition from paper certificates to framed placards and possibly presenting teacher honors at city council meetings to increase visibility.
On student-of-the-month logistics, staff confirmed there is an inventory of gift cards (Dunkin' Donuts, Menchie's, Boba Time, Urbane Cafe) and that they have sufficient supply for the coming year. Commissioners agreed to continue outreach to local businesses for additional donations. No formal policy changes were adopted; the commission directed staff to update nomination outreach and report back on timing and placard turnaround.
