The San Fernando Education Commission received a presentation of the district strategic plan and an introduction to Superintendent Andres Cheit during its July 28 meeting.
Moderator read a slide deck from an absent presenter and introduced "our superintendent, superintendent Andres Cheit," saying he brings decades of experience as an educator and district leader. The presentation summarized the district's five pillars—academic excellence; joy and wellness; engagement and collaboration; operational effectiveness; and investing in staff—and framed a multi-year effort called Destination 2030. The slides set measurable targets, including goals that by June 2030 students in grades 3–5 and 6–8 will perform at grade level in English language arts and mathematics, and that "85 percent of students in a graduating 9th through 12th grade cohort will be college and career ready, with at least 70 percent being college ready."
Commissioners and staff discussed community input and the plan's theory of action—learn from the community, support teachers and staff, collect and share information, and align actions to improve outcomes. The Moderator said the plan will be updated based on community feedback and emphasized continued alignment with standardized testing cycles. Staff indicated they will bring more detail and opportunities for public engagement to future meetings.
The presentation also noted related events and outreach, including a resource fair and back-to-school webinar to help families engage with the plan and services. Commissioners asked that staff provide specifics on how the strategic goals will be measured and how community input will be solicited; staff said those details will be provided in later agenda packets.
