Summary

Dr. Wade presented the district’s December calendar survey and recommended next steps as administrators prepare calendar options for the board.
"So, overall, 68% said yes, about 11% said maybe, and 21% said no," Dr. Wade told trustees when summarizing adult/community responses about a possible 4-day or hybrid schedule if the district provided childcare on the off day. The presentation disaggregated responses: staff support was higher (roughly 82% in favor), while student responses leaned negative (about 58% of student respondents said no).
Wade explained minute-count scenarios and trade-offs: a pure four-day option would require lengthening daily minutes to meet the state minimum annual minutes (estimated district savings from a 4-day calendar ranged from 0.5%–2%; a midpoint 1% estimate equates to about $380,000), and the district estimated childcare costs at roughly $30 per student per Friday. Wade said next steps include asking the board for calendar parameters (minimum/maximum minutes, minimum student and teacher days, earliest start and latest end dates) at the February meeting, drafting calendar options, and hosting a community meeting in March.
Board members pressed on implementation logistics — transportation, extracurriculars (which would still occur on Fridays), teacher contract days, and the risk that banked minutes and bad-weather makeup requirements could reduce flexibility. No calendar decision was made. Administrators will return with options consistent with board parameters.
