Council sets May 19 public hearing on proposed sewer, saltwater and solid waste rate increases

Finance Director Matt Baker presented a five-year rate study for sewer, saltwater and solid waste funds prepared with HDR engineering and recommended the council set a public hearing to receive comments on proposed fees. The study proposes 9.5% increases in sewer/saltwater for the first three years (and 6% in years four and five) and 4.5% annual increases for solid waste; staff stressed these forecasts are driven by CPI escalators in contracts, labor cost increases and planned capital projects including landfill expansion and treatment plant needs.
Baker said the current annual sewer fee is $1,097 per dwelling unit and would rise to about $1,201 (a roughly $100 per year change) under the first-year proposed increase; council voted to set a May 19 public hearing to consider rates and directed staff to publish notices and make lookup tools available on the city website.
