Council advances rental registration, inspection sheets and occupancy-code review

City staff noted the state average rental rate is about 30% and estimated Long Prairie may have roughly 60% rental housing; council members discussed options for tracking rental ownership using county homestead/non-homestead data.
Mayor Jim Kreemer moved to bring forward the proposed rental registration fee, inspection code sheet and revised Building and Maintenance and Occupancy Code to the city attorney for review; Council member Clint Krueger seconded and the motion was unanimously approved. Council indicated the trailer court will receive additional scrutiny and that licensing or yearly registration for landlords will be part of next steps. No ordinance was adopted at the meeting; council approved forwarding the materials for legal review and refinement.
