Los Angeles Nomadic Division previews Catalina public art exhibition for 2027

Brian Barsana (speaker 11), curator at large for Los Angeles Nomadic Division, briefed the council on a multi-artist public art exhibition planned for Avalon from May through October 2027. Barsana said the project is site-specific, designed for walkable access, free to visitors, and intended to engage local history and ecology through installations and programs. The plan includes partnerships with the Catalina Island Conservancy, the Catalina Island Museum and local arts groups.
Barsana described several proposed commissions (rammed-earth seed spheres, a reflective installation at Wrigley Memorial, tile murals and community garden projects) and said the program will pursue a mix of private and public sponsorships. He emphasized local engagement and said the artists have been visiting the island to learn local history and ecology.
